On July 12, 2017, KACE’s annual Grassroots Interns from New York visited the Queens Borough Hall, and met with the Queens Borough President, Melinda Katz. This visit provided interns with an opportunity to learn more specifically about community engagement in their local municipality. Additionally, the interns were able to meet with various directors and staff members to learn about their roles and the functions of Queens civic leadership.

Borough President Katz engaged with the interns in an in-depth discussion on why civic engagement and a thorough knowledge of one’s community is highly important. In return, KACE interns asked Borough President Katz questions on her work at Queens Borough Hall and on her priorities on art and transportation infrastructure.

This field trip was organized to provide the interns with the opportunity to speak to one of the civic leaders of the Queens community and to expose them to the variety of different careers in civic duties. After the meeting, students toured around Queens Borough Hall, learned about the structure and role of departments, and met with several staff members along the way, such as the Director of Communications/Media Relations, Director of Education, and more.
