Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE) hosted the inaugural KAGC U. Leadership Summit from January 7th to January 8th, 2016, the first of KACE’s programs designed to educate and mobilize college students. The summit took place at the Hilton Manhattan East in New York, and brought together 52 students from 23 universities across the United States.

By convening active leaders of Korean American student body in select universities, KACE sought to engage future Korean American leaders for local youth organization and grassroots civic engagement of campus across the United States.

On the first day of the conference, participating students received extensive education and training on Korean American history, grassroots activism, and voter registration.

They were also joined by guest speaker Roy D. Cho, who shared his experience as a former U.S. Congressional candidate and urged the students to participate in civic and political endeavors.

On the second day of the conference, students were broken up into groups according to the proximity of their schools, and developed action plans for hosting voter registration drives on campus.

Following the group discussion, students  headed to the Republic of Korea Mission to the United Nations for a brown-bag lunch session with Ambassador Oh Joon, Permanent Representative of Republic of Korea to the United Nations and President of the Economic and Social Council. Ambassador Oh briefed the students on the history of United Nations and South Korea’s involvement in the UN, as well as answering questions from the students.

The conference was concluded with a guided tour of the United Nations and survey questionnaires.

With the start of the spring semester, schools that participated in the leadership summit will each host an on-campus KAGC U., which consists of voter registration drive during the day and lecture/ dinner in the evening.
