I. Event Summary

This conference will invite Korean American leaders and activists from all over the United States to Washington, DC. This three-day conference has three main objectives:

  • Educate new grassroots activists;
  • Create a nationwide network of Korean American activists, and;
  • Increase civic participation of Korean Americans.

II. Objectives

  • Create Korean American grassroots activists
  • Education of grassroots activism and civic participation methods
  • Provide resources essential to organizing community, grassroots lobbying & activism, managing social networking media, and creating leadership
  • Politically uniting and empowering Korean Americans
  • Grassroots lobbying for HR1812 (Creation of a Special Visa Category for Korean Skilled Workers)

III. Expectations

  • Increasing civic participation of Korean Americans
  • Creation of a national network of Korean American political activists
  • Increasing the influence of Korean American community in Congress and government
  • Finding sponsors for HR1812

    – Grassroots Lobby: US Capitol, Washington, DC- Accommodation: Westin Tysons Corner Hotel
    – Gala and Reception: Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill

    – Tues-Thurs, July 29-31, 2014

~300 Community Activists from New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California, Georgia, Virginia, and Texas

VI. Costs

  • Accommodation: Two nights, three days – Paid for by Korean American Civic Empowerment
  • Personal food and other expenses: Paid by Attendee
  • Transportation:
    – Eastern US (CT/NJ/NY): (Group bus)
    – Other Areas: 50% of transportation fare reimbursed (Maximum $250) / Receipt required
  • GALA Ticket: Must be purchased separately for $200.00

VII. Schedule of Events

Day 1

  • Introduction to Grassroots Activity Session
    Educational Session: An introduction to the basics of grassroots activism
  • Grassroots Lobby Guide Session
    Educational Session: Basics of grassroots lobbying and preparation for the Grassroots Lobby Day for Congress

Day 2

  • H.R. 1812 Briefing Session
    Briefing by Rep. Peter Roskam (Sponsor of HR1812) and related staff about HR1812
  • Grassroots Lobby
    Advocacy/Lobby session where participants visit their assigned representatives to urge support for HR1812
  • Korean American Grassroots Conference GALA (& 7th Anniversary of Comfort Women Resolution Reception)
    Main event of the Conference – This will be a reception hosting Congress members and Korean Americans who participated in the conference. Also, “comfort women” survivors from the House of Sharing will be present for the 7th Anniversary of the Comfort Women Resolution (H.Res.121). Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce will be the keynote speakers. Other VIPs will be attending as well.GALA Ticket: $200

Day 3

  • Closing Session
    Sharing and feedback of experiences gained during the conference.
