On October 24th, 2013, Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE) and the Great Neck Korean American Citizen Association attended the Nassau County Executive Candidate Debate in Hempstead, New York.

This debate was hosted by the Long Island Civic Engagement Table and several local minority organizations including KACE, and is the first of its kind created for the minority communities. Several community leaders personally asked questions to the candidates.

The incumbent, Ed Mangano (Republican), was not present due to prior engagements. The Democratic candidate, Tom Suozzi (former Nassau County Executive) was present and answered the communities’ questions personally.

KACE President Dongchan Kim inquired on the executive orders passed several months prior. The executive orders state that Nassau County has to provide services and documentations to residents with limited English proficiency. The criteria of the language access service was set by the 2010 US Census and Korean is a supported language. As a result, it is expected that Korean residents of Nassau County will be able to utilize their governments’ services more efficiently.

Kim’s question was, “If elected, how will you bring these executive orders into action? Will you cooperate with organizations like ours in the process?”

Suozzi responded that education is necessary for all departments and its employees to accommodate different cultures. He expressed his willingness to work with minority organizations and bring forth the services specified in the executive orders as soon as possible.
