Volunteer Staff Daniel Lee is explaining the purpose of the Comfort Women Memorial at the Bergen County Courthouse.

On September 9th, 2013, a Japanese tour group of twenty visited the Comfort Women Memorial in front of the Bergen County Courthouse.

These tourists came as a part of the Fuji International Travel Service’s “Theme Tour” Program. They visited New York to learn more about the Comfort Women issues and visited the memorials in Palisades Park and Bergen County.

According to a Fuji International Travel Service’s staff member, the program was planned after learning about Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE) through the Japanese press’s coverage of the comfort women issue.

The group arrived in New York on September 8th, visited the memorial at Bergen County on September 9th from 1:30pm to 2:30pm, and proceeded to visit the memorial in Palisades Park.

The group met with KACE Program Director Wonseok Song and Volunteer Staff Daniel Lee to learn about the importance of the memorial and held a Question-and-Answers session.

All of the tourists agreed that the Comfort Women issue is a critical human rights violation that must be resolved by the Japanese government as soon as possible. Also they agreed upon the purpose of the memorials, which is to serve as a reminder of a horrible crime so that such crimes against humanity are never repeated again.

The tourists were engrossed with this issue as they spent over 40 minutes asking questions after Daniel Lee’s introduction of the monument.

After the explanation and the questions-and-answers session, a tourist thanked the Korean American community and the Korean American Civic Empowerment for their efforts. Also, another tourist marveled at the courage of the comfort women survivors and hoped for a quick resolution to this issue.

The staff member from Fuji International Travel Service asked for KACE’s help as they are continuing to plan more tour programs on this issue.
