On March 17th, 2013, Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE) held a voter registration and petition drive at the Hope Presbyterian Church in Palisades Park, NJ with the Korean American Association of Palisades Park. The petition drive was organized to collect signatures to oppose a recent immigration measure, which limits family-sponsored immigration, even for U.S. citizens. Through the Hope Presbyterian Church’s support, about 140 petitions were successfully collected.

During the talks for comprehensive immigration reform, the “Gang of Eight” decided to limit immigration for family members of American citizens. It is generally thought that even the White House has agreed with this decision. The “Gang of Eight” is formed by four Senators from each parties: Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Jeff Flake, and Marco Rubio for the Republicans, Mike Bennet, Chuck Schumer, Robert Menendez, and Richard Durbin for the Democrats.

KACE is strongly requesting that the family-sponsored immigration be reviewed again as limiting immigration through family sponsorship will worsen the condition of the already-broken immigration system.

In addition to the petition drive, KACE held a voter registration drive and distributed its 2013 New Jersey Election Guide. March 26th is the last day to register to vote for the April 16th School Board Elections. (Towns with School Board Elections: Palisades Park, Englewood, Cliffside Park, Norwood, Harrington Park, and 15 additional townships)

To register to vote, one must be an American citizen over the age of 18, and can register to vote 21 days before any elections. Voter registration is needs to be done once, but if one has moved, the change of address must be submitted.
KACE will hold a voter registration drive at the New Jersey Presbyterian Church in Palisades Park on Sunday, March 24.
