Closter Council Candidate John Glidden (Republican)

In June 28, 2013, Closter Republican Candidate John Glidden visited KACE to outreach to Korean American voters. He has been a councilman since 2004, now running for his fourth re-election.

Closter is a borough with a total population of 8354, of which 1897(22.7%) are Korean Americans. With an estimated 415 registered Korean voters, Closter is the eighth most Korean-voter populous town in Bergen County. There are 1221 Korean Americans who are U.S. citizens and are of eligible age to vote. Also, Korean Americans’ voter registration in Closter is approximately 33.9%.

Mr. Glidden shared his plans to attract families into Closter and to increase property values. He also pointed out that several problems need to be solved in order to make Closter a “destination” for new families. Three main issues in Closter that he focuses on are taxes, public safety, and education. His goals include keeping Closter’s tax rate as low as possible but still enough to maintain public safety and manage public affairs. Since he has a background in public finance, he looks forward to institute “shared services” to make taxes more affordable for residents. Also, although schools are run by a separately elected school board, Mr. Glidden wishes to exercise his influence over education in order to promote good education.

As Closter’s police commissioner(head of the public safety committee), he wishes to hire Korean American policemen because he recognizes that Korean Americans make up about 23% of Closter’s population. When Mr. Glidden was first elected in 2004, he revitalized Closter’s Chamber of Commerce. He emphasized his interest in the involvement of Korean Americans to the community for the improvement of Closter. Mr. Glidden stated: “We’re trying to encourage even more Koreans Americans to participate in Closter’s Chamber of Commerce because it is able to collect all of the voices of the business owners in town.”
