On February 3rd, 2013, Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan, Freeholder John Mitchell, and Englewood Cliffs Councilwoman Gloria Oh visited the Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE)’s New Jersey Office for the Lunar New Year and discussion of issues in the Korean American community.

Starting off with a Korean new year’s greetings, Donovan formally announced the dedication of the Bergen County Comfort Women Memorial. The memorial will be revealed on the International Women’s Day (March 8th) at 3PM. The ceremony can be attended by anyone.

Donovan also presented photographs of her visit to the House of Sharing last October. Donovan stated that she decided to help raise the memorial after she met the Comfort Women survivors. She thought to herself that such a tragedy should never happen again. Donovan emphasized that this memorial is not of any anti-Japanese intentions, but is raised to remember those who were affected by this tragedy.

The Bergen County memorial was proposed by Freeholder John Mitchell last Fall. The measure was passed by the Board of Freeholders and approved by the County Executive. Mitchell stated that this memorial is being raised for women’s rights and is for all Americans.

The Bergen County Comfort Women Memorial is the first of its kind to be erected by the efforts of the government. Also, the placement of the memorial next to the Holocaust, Armenian Genocide, The Great Irish Famine, and Slavery of African Americans memorials signify that this tragedy is on the same level on the other events. Chejin Park, Staff Attorney at KACE commented that Bergen County was the starting location for the 2009 Comfort Women Memorial.

Freeholder David Ganz was scheduled to attend this meeting as well, but a staff member joined instead due to the passing of Ganz’s son.
