On July 14, 2013, Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE) visited the Chamsarang Church, located in Hempstead, to conduct the 8080 Campaign and provide free legal assistance services.

The “8080 Campaign” is KACE’s new long-term initiative to increase the Korean American community’s voter registration rate and turnout rate to 80%. The initiative involves voter registration drives, civic participation, and voter education programs. KACE is currently recruiting Korean interpreters for the New York City Board of Elections as well.

In the State of New York, elections are being held for local legislatures and courts. In New York City, elections will be held for mayor, public advocate, comptroller, district attorney, borough president, and the city council. The last day to register for the primary election is August 16th and the election itself is on Tuesday, September 10.

The head pastor, Rev. Hee Kon Eun asked the congregation for their full support and several church members approached KACE’s table to inquire about elections and registered to vote.

In addition, KACE Board member Youngsoo Choi, Esq. joined this event and provided legal assistance.

Seventeen new voter registrations were accepted and KACE distributed about sixty election guides.

The interns and volunteers that attended this event were Minjin Kim (Bronx HS of Science), Esther Yun (Roslyn HS), Ludia Ock (Roslyn HS), and Andrew Ock (Roslyn HS).
