On February 1st, 2012, “Citizens for Phillip Kwon for NJ Supreme Court Justice” held a press conference at the Korean American Voters’ Council New Jersey office and presented the start of a grassroots support campaign.

New Jersey State Senator Kevin O’Toole, Deputy Mayor of Palisades Park Jason Kim, Former Mayor of Edison Jun Choi, the Korean American Association of New Jersey, the Korean American Association of Fort Lee, Korean American Association of Southern New Jersey, Korean American Association of Central New Jersey, New Jersey Senior Citizens’ Association, and leaders of thirty organizations attended and voiced their support for Phillip Kwon.

Senator O’Toole stated that Phillip Kwon is a more than qualified candidate for the Supreme Court. He added that although people may believe that his nomination is contested because Kwon is Asian, but the fact of the matter is that Kwon’s academics, law practice experience, and his position as the right hand of the Attorney General proved his worth, and he is getting accosted for them.

Several press outlets criticized Kwon for living with his parents, but O’Toole stated that this is because Americans don’t understand Korean culture, that it is customary for Koreans to take in their parents when they are elderly or sick, and we must be proud of Kwon for taking care of his parents.

Jun Choi said that the Korean community and the Asian community must work together to convince the New Jersey Senate to expedite Kwon’s confirmation. Jason Kim said that the nomination of Phillip Kwon is an uncommon opportunity for both Korean and Asian communities and it must not be let go, and asked for their support.

This campaign started immediately with an online petition.
