On December 28th, 2011, KAVC met with Patricia DiCostanzo from the Board of Elections and Bergen County NJ’s new clerk, John Hogan to discuss Korean language services that will be implemented in 2012.

Koreans comprise 6.3% of the population in Bergen County according to the Census 2010 Results. As a result, Bergen County has been selected as the fourth municipality in the nation to provide Korean language services mandatorily. Starting from 2012, all election materials will be published in other languages as well as Korean.

Ms. DiCostanzo said that the Board of Elections is doing its best to provide all of their services in Korea. First, she stated that the website will be translated into Korean very soon. Also, the Board of Elections will dispatch seven Korean troubleshooters to Palisades Park, Fort Lee, Edgewater, Englewood Cliffs, Demarest, Closter, and Cresskill to monitor polling sites. If more municipalities need Korean troubleshooters, that can be accomodated for as well, according to DiCostanzo.

KAVC met with Hogan, the new clerk, and other staff to urge them to correct the Korean-language ballots, and make sure to review the wording. Bergen Record advertised that elections will be held on January 24th for the issue of education in Fort Lee. Korean-language announcements will be on Korean newspapers and media as per KAVC’s request.
